Lenten Teaching Series

  • Church of the Holy Cross (SI) 2520 Middle Street Sullivan's Island, SC 29482 (map)
  1. Reminding ourselves of where we start up—understanding fully the truth of the gospel and our new birth as Christians

When Jesus said "come follow me," what is involved in that? Join us on Wednesdays during Lent as we unpack this very question through musical worship, teaching from the Rev. Dr. Kendall Harmon, and a time of questions.

Wednesdays March 9-April 6 at 6-8pm

Holy Cross Sullivan's Island Great Hall

A light lenten supper of soup and salad will be provided.

Childcare available for 4 months-8 years.

From Kendall:

"I see," [Lucy] said at last, thoughtfully. "I see now. This garden is like the Stable. It is far bigger inside than it was outside."
"Of course, Daughter of Eve," said the Faun. "The further up and the further in you go, the bigger everything gets. The inside is larger than the outside."’

So reads one of the scenes toward the end of CS Lewis’s last book in the Chronicles of Narnia, The Last Battle. That phrase “further up and further in” is one of my very favorites of any that Lewis uses. It speaks to the boundless depths of the love of the triune God for us and the life into which he calls us.

It is exactly to this theme of depth that we shall seek to turn our attention this Lent in our series which uses the Lewis phrase for its title which will be, “Further Up and Further Into the Gospel.” Basically we shall be asking what Jesus meant and what exactly is involved when he said,  “Come follow me.” This Lenten series will dovetail well with the theme Chris Warner set for the year of 2022 in our recent annual meeting, that we should ABOUND in our Lord.

We will meet on five successive Wednesdays this Lent in the Parish Hall at Sullivan’s Island. Our format will include a light supper beginning at 6:00, followed by a brief period of worship and then a teaching followed by a time for of discussion and questions and answers. We will always conclude by 8 pm.

Please note that we will not be streaming the classes live at this time and want to encourage in person attendance. We will, however, be recording all sessions to make them available at a later time for those who were not able to be present and/or want to access the material on their own time.
